5 PROFITABLE THINGS TO DO AFTER NATIONAL SERVICE WHILE JOB HUNTING

this isn’t a style post, it’s about a more pressing matter…

Every year, lots and lots of young Ghanaian graduates go through what we call national service, which is basically one year of service to the nation in either public or private sector. It sort of prepares you for the ‘job market’ except about 50% of graduates don’t get into the job market, at least not immediately. So what do you do in that period of job hunting?

  • Take time off to figure your life out

I’m at that stage where I’m not really sure what I want to do after national service. Like I know I want to have a job, work for sometime and go back to school maybe but if you ask what kind of job, I’ll probably not have a specific answer. I feel it’s the case with most graduates. So, that period, the period after national service when you can’t really tell what’s happening next in your life? Use that period to find out more about yourself, your purpose. Use it to put your life in ‘perspective’ so that you aren’t just walking through life but you have an actual goal or purpose that you’re moving towards.  I’ve heard a lot of people say books like Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren have been very helpful with finding their purpose. Definitely not a bad place to start if you’re still trying to figure your life out.

  • STUDY. Yes, you read right

My boss once said ‘ it’s not that there are no jobs, it’s that there aren’t qualified people to take up the positions’. A degree is awesome but employers are looking for not just any graduates but people who can get the job done, highly skilled individuals. Sign up for an  online course on edx or cousera , learn an additional language.  Invest time into your personal development. It’ll be a matter of time before you’re sought after for your skills.

  • Start a business

This may seem cliche plus not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur but if you have the desire to, I think you totally should. Instead of sitting at home and getting sad about being ‘unemployed’, start a business that’ll keep you occupied and make you money. I read a story about a lady on twitter, very inspiring. She casually made a joke about selling braised rice as opposed to sitting at home, unemployed. She currently takes orders from organizations and individuals. So impressive.

  • Take a temporary job as a Sales representative

I think this is the most advertised job online. I find an ad for sales reps every now and then. And even though the income may not be huge, it’s a better alternative to staying at home and doing nothing at all.

  • Internship

This still boils down to personal development. Apply to intern at companies you’ll want to work in, dedicate time to learning as much as you can during the internship. It’s a sacrifice and an investment in the sense that, even though you may not be paid as an intern, you’re learning things that’ll be useful to you in the long run. Trust me, it’ll pay off.

I mentioned that this is a little different from my usual content but I feel this is the perfect time to share this. There’s definitely that one person that could use a little encouragement and guidance during this period. I haven’t figured it out myself but I’m lucky to have people in my life who encourage and guide me from time to time. So, why not share.
